The purpose of this experiment was (1) to extract the fat out of the food sample using the Soxhlet method, and (2) to determine the total amount of fat in the original food sample.

Methods
a semi-continuous fat extraction
solvent: petroleum ether
Steps
Fill thimble with 1 gram of freeze dried sample.
Place thimble in apparatus.
Fill round bottom flask about halfway with petroleum ether,
Allow extraction to run for 2 hours.
Drive ether off using nitrogen gas.
Weigh to determine amount of crude fat.
